CHAMP1 Mutations Linked to Intellectual Disability Impair DNA Repair
Researchers investigated premature termination codon mutations in the CHAMP1 gene found in individuals with intellectual disability. The study found that these mutations cause a defect in homologous recombination — a key DNA repair process — through haploinsufficiency, meaning that having only one functional copy of the gene is not sufficient for normal repair. These findings help clarify the molecular mechanism by which CHAMP1 mutations lead to intellectual disability.
