POGZ Identified as Novel Genetic Cause in Epilepsy with Myoclonic-Atonic Seizures Study
A study of 60 patients with epilepsy involving myoclonic-atonic seizures (formerly Doose syndrome) identified genetic variants in 38.5% of those tested, including POGZ as one of four genes newly linked to this syndrome. Researchers found that outcomes varied widely: about 62% of patients achieved seizure freedom, while 38% had drug-resistant epilepsy and 58% had intellectual disability. Global developmental delay at the time of epilepsy onset was the strongest predictor of worse outcomes. The findings support using whole exome sequencing early in diagnosis to guide treatment and family counselling.
